EMDR therapy in Madrid: to process what was left unresolved

Some experiences don't heal with time alone: your body keeps reacting as if they were still happening. EMDR helps your brain complete the processing that was interrupted, within an integrative process rather than a cold protocol.

A method that helps your brain finish what was left half-done

When we live through something overwhelming, the brain sometimes can't process it fully. The experience gets stored with its emotional and bodily charge intact, frozen in time. That's why, years later, a smell, a tone of voice or a similar situation can trigger the exact same reaction.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping or auditory cues) while you connect with that material, helping the brain resume the natural processing that was interrupted. It's not about forgetting what happened, but about the memory no longer hurting as if it were happening now.

It's one of the most evidence-backed methods for working with traumatic and emotionally difficult experiences. If you want to go deeper, I explain it calmly in what EMDR is and how it works.

When EMDR makes sense

EMDR was developed for post-traumatic stress, but its scope is much wider. In my practice I use it, among other things, for:

  • Single experiences that left a mark: accidents, losses, assaults, break-ups that still weigh more than they should.
  • Early experiences conditioning your present: what you lived through in childhood that still shapes how you relate, push yourself or protect yourself.
  • Anxiety with roots: when anxiety won't go away with relaxation techniques because something underneath keeps feeding it.
  • Intrusive memories and flashbacks: when the past breaks into the present without asking permission.
  • Grief that won't move forward, and specific fears or phobias.

EMDR within a process, not as a cold protocol

This is the main difference from an EMDR-only approach: I don't apply EMDR in isolation. I integrate it into a broader therapeutic process, because that's how it works best in my practice:

Before processing, stabilising. If your nervous system is on permanent alert, we first build regulation resources so processing is safe rather than overwhelming.

The parts that protect you are respected. With IFS, we first listen to the parts of you that have spent years protecting that material. The door isn't forced: it's knocked on.

The body takes part. Somatic work accompanies the whole process, because what was left unprocessed doesn't live only in memory: it lives in the body.

The result is EMDR at your pace, carefully dosed, within a therapeutic relationship that holds you, not a technique applied cold.

What an EMDR session looks like

The first sessions are about preparation: understanding your story, identifying what to work on and building stabilisation resources. Only once there's a foundation do we move to processing.

In processing sessions, we identify the memory or experience, the beliefs attached to it ("I'm not enough", "I'm not safe") and the bodily sensations present. While you keep your attention on that material, I facilitate the bilateral stimulation. Your brain does the rest: it connects, associates, integrates. You simply observe what comes up.

EMDR sessions are usually a bit longer (60–90 minutes), and you don't need to recount every detail of what happened: processing doesn't require narrating it all.

And online? Yes, it works, with adaptations. I explain it in detail in does EMDR work online?

Is EMDR for you?

It may help you if…

  • There are past experiences you know are still weighing on you.
  • You react disproportionately to situations that "shouldn't" affect you so much.
  • You've done talk therapy and understand what's happening, but your body hasn't got the memo.
  • You have intrusive memories, hypervigilance or anxiety with roots.
  • You want to work on something specific without having to narrate it all.

It may not be the first step if…

  • You're looking for a quick fix in two sessions: serious processing requires preparation.
  • You're currently in an acute crisis without a support network: we stabilise first.
  • You need psychological or psychiatric evaluation: I'll point you to the right professional.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to tell you everything that happened?

No. One of the advantages of EMDR is that processing doesn't require narrating every detail. I need to understand enough to accompany you well, but you decide how much to share.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what we work on. A single recent experience can be processed in a few sessions; early, repeated experiences require a longer process with a preparation phase. We assess it together and review as we go.

Does EMDR work online?

Yes. The evidence shows results comparable to in-person work in most cases, with adapted protocols. For complex trauma with a strong dissociative load, I usually recommend starting in person.

Do you offer EMDR on its own or within a process?

Within a process. EMDR is a powerful tool, but it works best with preparation, nervous-system regulation and a therapeutic relationship that holds you. I don't apply cold protocols.
