The vagus nerve: your natural brake

The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It connects the brain to the heart, lungs, stomach, and intestines. It's the main channel of the parasympathetic nervous system. the "brake" that balances sympathetic activation (stress, alert, fight/flight).

When vagal tone is low, your nervous system stays stuck in alert mode: muscle tension, disrupted digestion, shallow sleep, background irritability.

tVNS (transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation) sends a gentle electrical current to the auricular branch of the vagus nerve. a branch that runs through your ear. It's painless (feels like a mild tingling), non-invasive, and can be used in session and at home.

What controlled studies show

taVNS activates vagal projections to the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), producing measurable changes in brain activity similar to implanted vagal stimulation, without surgery.

A meta-analysis shows positive signals in reducing depressive and anxiety symptoms, with a favourable safety profile and minimal side effects.

Important note: tVNS is an emerging tool with positive signals in controlled studies. It's not an approved clinical treatment for specific conditions. I use it as a complement to the therapeutic process, not a substitute.

How it's used in a session

Device placement

A small clip is placed on your left ear, on the concha (where the vagus nerve branch passes). Intensity is adjusted until you feel a comfortable mild tingling. It doesn't hurt.

Stimulation during session

The device works while we talk. Vagal stimulation facilitates a state of greater openness and lower reactivity. a physiological "floor" that allows deeper work with better regulation.

Closing

We remove the device and evaluate how you felt. If you decide to continue with tVNS at home, we prepare the plan.

If tVNS works well for you in session, you can rent a Nesa XSignal device for home use between sessions. Standard protocol is 30 minutes daily for 4-8 weeks.

What's included? The device, electrodes, usage instructions, and weekly follow-up in session to adjust parameters and evaluate response.

Contraindications: vasovagal syncope, active ear surgery or infection, uncontrolled arrhythmia. Evaluated case by case.
